PROJECTExhibition panels: Feliks Topolski ‘Memoir of the Century’
The brief
For this permanent Topolski exhibition, we were asked to produce over 45 difficult-to-print exhibition panels – in under a week.
The work
We’ve successfully worked with Museum & Gallery exhibition designers for over 20 years now. This experience was invaluable to deliver great results for this exciting project, especially considering the time pressures.
We worked closely with the design agency, the gallery itself and a specialist installation team to cleverly incorporate the exhibition panels alongside Topolski’s paintings.
To do this, we printed directly onto the same bare boards that Topolski painted onto in the first place. This presented a problem, as the boards were not perfectly flat, causing feeding difficulties with our flatbed printer. The team overcame this by taping and nailing each board to an MDF wooden float.
As the graphic walls were made up of a number of continual panels, heavy text was printed millimeter-perfect onto each panel. In addition to this, we also used white inks to highlight body text where relevant, creating a washed-wood effect as the grain of the wood showed through.
The results
This wonderfully evocative exhibition has been very well received, with our work adding to the authenticity of the artist’s work and the period. The site is a permanent fixture and will be updated for special events throughout the years.
