PROJECTGraphics for the children’s Ray’s of Sunshine Ward
The brief
To create a bright, welcoming environment for children and their families in the children’s liver transplant unit at King’s College Hospital: the Rays of Sunshine Ward. Artinsite developed an engaging narrative theme that brought together imagery associated with the two main donors to the ward: the Rays of Sunshine Charity and The Starfish Appeal. We were asked to produce and install the graphics, whilst working within strict NHS health and safety guidelines
The work
Working closely with Artinsite Director Louisa Williams and artist Martin Jones, we artworked the many diverse and intricately linked graphic design elements that would appear throughout the ward, across corridor walls, ceilings, bedheads and other media.
We sourced specialist materials and laminates with antibacterial warranties, fire resistance certification and long-lasting substrates that could be deep cleaned and maintained into the future. We printed over 90 separate elements, producing photographic quality graphic panels with a specialist lamination mounted onto fire-rated diabond and printing directly onto fire-rated Kappa to produce ‘sky effect’ ceiling tiles.
After submitting health and safety and risk assessment documentation we then installed all elements, including an interactive play wall
Results
The art installation has transformed the ward and corridors into a bright, colourful, engaging environment. The work has been extremely well received by staff, patients and visitors alike, the most frequent comment being; “It feels so unlike a hospital”. Exactly on brief!
