PROJECTThomas Cook Children’s Critical Care Centre, London
The brief
To produce and install an art installation that would appeal to young patients and their parents. The aim was to give the centre a consistent identity, with a welcoming feel for each ward and patient bed, and to provide a positive focus for children by creating an interactive space that could be personalised.
The work
Leading to the intensive care ward, we produced an 11m frieze of Camber Sands, East Sussex, which created a calming, dream-like feel. We personalised each bedspace with individual kites and beach toys set against blue skies.
For the high dependency ward, we produced a vibrant 11m frieze facing the open bed bays themed around a tropical island. Large scale images of tropical fish and underwater reef scenes continued the theme on bedhead boards, detracting attention from medical equipment.
All graphics were produced using high quality Lambda digital prints wrap-mounted to fire-rated MDF with a hard wearing ‘crystal’ laminate. Custom formed acrylic pockets were fixed to the bedhead boards and magnetic ‘pin boards’ allowed parents to display photographs and greetings cards. The imagery was also used in pre-printed dry-wipe magnetic team boards and ward literature.
Results
The work has been nominated for the Award for Best Use of Visual Art in Healthcare.
